Artist Gautam Mukherjee is strongly influenced by family values. A sensitive artist, his subjects have extremely expressive, fish-shaped eyes, a typical characteristic of Bengali people, especially Bengali women. Mukherjee believes that eyes are the most prominent feature in a person, eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. Thus, while painting his stunning artwork, he focuses on the eyes the most. In a way, he breathes life into his canvas by painting very expressive eyes for his subjects. Gautam Mukherjee’s love for art began developing at a young age, when he helped painting and decorating the annual Durga Pooja pandals in his neighborhood. He was fascinated by the “Kalighat Patachitra”, a popular art form in Bengal, which accessorizes the background of the pooja pandal. This took Gautam’s love for Indian art to the next level.
The artist Gautam Mukherjee captures the daily activities of a Bengali family. Along with the human figures, onlookers can also see antique mirrors, doors and windows, old wooden cupboards, vintage telephones, etc. in these paintings. In his own unique way, the artist preserves the culture of the bygone days. Even though they are set in today’s world, Mukherjee’s paintings have a fascinating history attached to them.
